Historical Commission

The Paxton Historical Commission was created by a town bylaw in 1972. It consists of a 7 member board appointed by the Board of Selectment for 3 year terms. Its mission has always been the preservation, protection, and development of the historical and archaeological assets of the town of Paxton.

Open House at the Commission Office in the Senior Center at 17 West St. is held throughout the Spring and Summer during the second Saturday of the month from 9:00am to 10:30am. Special appointments may be made by calling (508) 798-5092.

Every year the Historical Commission creates calendars composed of archival town photos with profits from sales being used to benefit the town. Annual tours of several historic town buildings and the Paxton Center Cemetery are also offered to third graders at the Paxton Center School. During Paxton Days, the Commission takes photographs of residents in historic colonial garb and displays numerous town artifacts.

Residents who have historical items or photographs they wish to donate or have recorded by the Commission are welcome to do so by visiting the Senior Center or leaving a note for the Historical Commission in the Paxton town hall.

Some of the work of the commission involves the following:

  • Preservation, protection and development of the historical assets of the Town
  • Conduct research on historic artifact
  • Conduct researches for places of historic value
  • Advertise, prepare, print and distribute books, maps, plans and pamphlets which may deemed necessary

Prospective new members or interested residents are always encouraged to attend the monthly meeting held in the Historical Commission Office during the third Thursday of the month at 7:30pm.
